Gastric Ballooning is also known as an intragastric balloon procedure. This is a type of weight loss treatment that can help a patient lose weight without invasive surgery. It is a quicker weight loss option when compared to other forms of treatments available. It works by reducing the hunger levels of an individual thus helping to control our food cycle and take an effective step towards reducing our weight in the long run.
Gastric Balloon is a soft silicon balloon that is inserted into the patient’s stomach. This balloon partially fills the stomach which leads to the feeling of fullness for the patient. Balloon is inserted into the stomach through mouth and esophagus, in a deflated form. This is done using a thin flexible tube which has a camera at the other end, called an endoscope. The patient will be given a sedative to numb the feeling of pain when the balloon is inserted. Then the balloon is filled with a saline solution.
One of the major advantages of using this type of treatment is to avoid the invasive surgery and the risks associated with surgery. Patients with gastric balloon treatment experience about 20-30% weight loss depending on the exiating weight of the patient.
The patient should not consume any food 6 hours prior to the treatment. They must also discuss the post-treatment diet with the doctor before the treatment so as to get an idea of the diet to be followed after the procedure is done and be mentally prepared.
When we come to the risks and complications involved in this treatment, there are not many major risks involved. However, a patient should be aware of the small risks such as bleeding or perforation during insertion or removal of the tube and discomfort such as nausea and vomiting which is common for the first few days following the treatment.
After the treatment is done, the gastric balloon will be removed. It will be pulled out through the mouth by using an endoscopic tube. The stomach of the patient will return to normal size once the gastric balloon is removed.
