Arthroplasty(Hip & Knee)

Arthroplasty is a surgical procedure which is performed for reconstruction or replacement of a joint. The main purpose of the arthroplasty surgery is to restore the functionality of the affected joint.

Hip Anthroplasty
The hip arthroplasty is thereplacement of the hip joint with an artificial device. This artificial device is called as aprosthesis. The surgery is performedto provide relief from pain and improve the functionality of the hip joint.

Who requires it? People suffering from the following condition may requirehaving a hip arthroplasty. This condition may be Osteoarthritis,Rheumatoid arthritis (a chronicinflammatory disease which causes pain in joints, swelling), Osteonecrosis or avascular necrosis (death of bone due to insufficient blood supply) and Bone tumor.

Some of the common symptoms of these diseases are swelling, pain and stiffness in the joint.

Usually, hip arthroplasty is doneon people who are aged over 60 years. But the procedure is well performed on young people. As the procedure is very successful in relieving the patient from pain, increasing the mobility and functionality of the hip. The surgery can be performed in two ways, and these are aTraditional hip replacement and Minimal invasive surgery.

Complications of hip replacement or hip arthroplasty are hip dislocation, pain and inflammatory reaction due to absorption of the wear off particles from the artificial surface by the surrounding tissue.

Knee Arthroplasty
Knee arthroplasty is performed on people suffering fromOsteoarthritis, Psoriatic arthritis, Rheumatoid arthritis.
The knee replacement or knee arthroplasty surgery is performed to relieve pain and increase the mobility to allow the patient to be more active. The surgery involves removal of damaged cartilage and bone from the surface of the knee joint and replaces it withan artificial surface.

Knee arthroplasty of two types and these are Partial knee replacement and Total knee replacement.

  • It is performed in two waysTraditional way and Minimal invasive knee replacement.
  • The Knee replacement surgery is usually performed on people suffering from advanced osteoarthritis and bone trauma.
  • Complication of knee replacement surgery are scarring, blood clots and infections. People who have undergone this surgery are advised to not take up high-impact sports and jogging.
