Inside every tooth, below the enamel, there is a hard layer called dentin and a soft tissue called pulp. Pulp has blood vessels, nerves and other tissues which are instrumental in the growth and development of the tooth. However, thetooth can survive without pulp once it has grown completely. Sometimes, this pulp gets inflamed or infected which, in turn, makes it essential to use root canal treatment to avoid any further damage and get relieved of the pain.
The inflammation of the pulp can be a cause of serious pain. If it is left untreated, it might even lead to an infection or abscessed tooth. An abscess is a pus-filled area that forms at the roots of the tooth and it occurs when the infection spreads all the way to the tooth. It can even cause swelling and bone loss. There are a number ofcausesofdeep decay, crack or chip in the tooth, repeated dental procedures, etc. which can give rise to such kind of problem.
One cannot directly relate the pain or irritation with this problem as it isn’t that obvious and pain usually is due to some other problem like acavity or other things like that. Also, there are no visible symptoms as well. Still, if there is immense pain, prolong sensitivity to heat and cold, discoloration and swelling, drainage and tenderness in lymph nodes or bone and gum tissues, one can take these for signs for the requirement of a root canal or endodontic treatment.
This treatment involves removal of infected pulp and careful cleaning and shaping the inside of the root canal. Later, the cavity is filled and sealed. A crown is placed or other restoration on thetooth to protect and revive it to full function. After this, tooth works fine as always. The procedure is very comfortable.
