Rhinoplasty, or simply ‘nose job’, is a surgical procedure to reshape the nose, making it larger or smaller; changing its angle in respect to the upper lip; altering the tip of the nose; or correcting bumps, indentations, or other defects in the nose. It is a plastic surgery procedure to reconstruct the form of the nose, aesthetically improving its appearance; resolving nasal trauma, congenital defect, respiratory impediments, or a failed rhinoplasty.

During the surgery, an otolaryngologist, a maxillofacial surgeon, or a plastic surgeon operates to create a functional, aesthetic nose which is proportional to the face by separating the nasal skin and the soft tissues, correcting them as the patients desire.

A patient’s suitability to for undergoing rhinoplasty surgery is determined by the surgeon by clinically evaluating the patient’s medical history, making sure he or she is physically and psychologically healthy.

Surgical Procedure
The plastic surgical method of rhinoplasty is basically of two types: open rhinoplasty and closed rhinoplasty, classified on the basis of the surgeon’s incisional approach. The correction of congenital and acquired abnormalities of the nose helps restore the functional and aesthetic properties of the nose by the surgeon’s manipulation of the nose. In open rhinoplasty, the surgeon makes a small, irregular incision on the outer fleshy part of the nose called columella, whereas in closed rhinoplasty, the whole procedure is done exclusively from within the nose and does not require making an incision on columella.

Non-surgical Rhinoplasty
The non-surgical method of rhinoplasty deals with injectable filters, such as collagen, to alter the shape of the nose without invasive surgery. The procedure’s main objectives are to fill the depressed areas, lift the angle of the nose, and smoothen the appearance of bumps on the bridge.

A few post surgical risks of rhinoplasty can be expected to be temporary swelling and bruising around the eyes and nose after the procedure. Other problems that may arise can be bleeding, injury or holes in the septum, skin problems, infections and, serious nasal blockage due to swelling.
