Gastrectomy

Gastrectomy is a process of removal of a part or all of the stomach. It is used when there are problems of thestomach which cannot be cured by other treatments like—benign tumours, bleeding, and inflammation, perforations in the stomach wall, polyps, stomach cancer and severe peptic ulcers. Some of its types can also be used to treat obesity.

Gastrectomy can be of three main types—a partial gastrectomy, a full gastrectomy, and a sleeve gastrectomy. A partial gastrectomy refers to the removal of a part of the stomach, while a full gastrectomy is the removal of the entire stomach and a sleeve gastrectomy includes the removal of the left side of the stomach and is performed for weight loss.
It can be performed in two different ways under general anesthesia; one is open surgery—which involves a large, single incision in which the doctor clearly examine the stomach directly after stretching the muscles, nerves, and skin. Another one is laparoscopic surgery—which uses small incisions, specialized tools and is less painful.

There are certain risks of performing a gastrectomy which involves—acid reflux, diarrhea, and gastric dumping syndrome, an infection in the chest, internal bleeding, nausea, vomiting and stomach acid leaking into theesophagus. The most common of all types of gastrectomy is gastric sleeve surgery which removes about 80% of the stomach. As a result of which a patient feels less hungry, lose up tothree-fourth of his excess weight and be able to improve or cure his obesity-related health problems.

Successful patients can avoid gaining weight again by working closely with their surgeon’s nutritionist, using a personal trainer, keeping a food journal, and maintaining motivation and dedication. The cost of a proper weight-loss surgery depends on the amount of weight that has been removed or is planned to be removed from the stomach and varies differently for different types of Gastrectomy.
