Lung Transplant

Lung Transplantation refers to the replacement of a dying or already damaged lung(s) with a healthy lung, commonly from a deceased donor. It is effective for those who have their lungs damaged to an extreme level, by a lethal disease.

Lung transplantation is mostly needed by those people who have any of the many severe lung diseases which include diseases like—Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (emphysema and chronic bronchitis), Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, Cystic fibrosis and Idiopathic pulmonary arterial hypertension.

COPD (Chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases) are the most common progressive lung diseases that make its sufferers undergo lung transplantation. The most occurring ones are emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Where emphysema slowly damages the air sacs in lungs, bronchitis, on the other hand, causes inflammation and narrows bronchial tubes, which further build up the mucus. The major cause of COPD is smoking; however, long-time exposure to chemical irritants can also cause it.Early symptoms of COPD can be quite mild, and one might mistake these as of common cold. Its symptoms include—need to clear throat every once in a while, especially in the mornings, mild but a chronic cough and shortage of breath, especially after exercising.

The symptoms can get worse as the lungs degrade progressively and can be much worse when one is a regular smoker or regularly exposed to smoke. Later on, advanced diagnosis is done by doctors to confirm the disease and to make sure if the patient needs the transplantation or not. Advanced diagnosis includes—Spirometry, Imaging tests, Arterial blood gas test, etc.
COPD can be treated to ease the occurring symptoms, to prevent further complications and generally, to slow down the progress of thedisease. One can receive advised medication, oxygen therapy or go through the surgery to get rid of COPD.
Taking care of thebody as advised and changing lifestyle as per medication and treatment can help in curbing the disease as well as avoiding the transplantation.
