Surger For Epilepsy

Epilepsy is a very dangerous disease, which is often controlled either by heavy medications or surgery in the end. There are many types of epilepsy and epilepsy surgery is known as neurosurgery. In this type of surgery, either the brain is disconnected, resected or stimulated. Many have focal epilepsy syndrome that is about 60%. When drugs stop controlling seizures, surgery is recommended in case of epilepsy. Here thefirst epileptic focus is figured out after performing tests, and then surgery is performed carefully. Epilepsies is also caused due to thetumor, cyst, and lesion which are less responding to medication. Following are the types of Epilepsies: Focal resection, hemispherectomy, corpuscallosotomy and laser interstitial thermal therapy

First, the patient is evaluated by anepileptologist. Epilepsy team usually configures of neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, EEG technicians, nurse clinicians, etc. after proper diagnosis. Epilepsy surgery should be performedwhen seizures become uncontrollable with medication, they have severe side effects on quality of life, partial seizures starting from one side of brain and seizure discharge spreading to theentire brain.

During surgery, thepatient is prepared first by giving anesthesia and then craniotomy is performed. Also, then brain mapping is performed, and seizure focus area is removed. And then craniotomy is closed.

Restrictions after the surgery
Driving after surgery is restricted until and unless discussed by surgeons and traveling for extended hours. Lifting anything heavier than 5 pounds is restricted. Doing all the physical work that needs energy should also be avoided. Alcohol should not be taken.

A doctor should be prescribed if having atemperature greater than 101 Fahrenheit or having allergy or redness etc. If drowsiness increases or vomiting or headaches are there, thedoctor should be prescribed.
