Hip Resurfacing

Hip resurfacing is a surgical procedure which is an alternative to hip replacement surgery. Hip resurfacing is donein order to relieve the patient from pain and restore the functionality of the hip joint. The procedure involves placing a cobalt-chrome metal cap over the femur while a matching metal cap is placed in the acetabulum or pelvis socket, replacing the articulating surfaces of the patient’s hip joint. While in traditional hip replacement surgery, the head of the femur and the damaged socket or acetabulum are both removed and replaced with artificial surfaces. The hip resurfacing involves very little removal of bones compared to a hip replacement surgery.

The hip resurfacing surgery is performed on the patients suffering from:

  • Osteoarthritis, it is a type of joint disorder that’s results from thebreakdown of joint cartilage and underlying bones, some of the common symptoms of it are joint pain, joint swelling and hindered motion.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis,it is a chronic inflammatory disease which causes pain in joints, swelling and may result in low RBC count and inflammation around lungs and heart.
  • Osteonecrosis or avascular necrosis,it is caused by thedeath of bone due to insufficient blood supply. Someof the common symptoms of it are Pain, Groin pain, limping and hindered motion.
  • Bone tumor, it is caused by theneoplastic growth of tissue in the bone. Some of its symptoms are pain, fever, fatigue, etc.

Advantages of hip resurfacing are: hip resurfacing is easier to revise, it has decreased therisk of hip dislocation and betterwalking pattern compared to traditional hip replacement.

Like any other surgery, the hip resurfacing also has some complications like Blood clots, Infections, Dislocations and Injury to nerves and arteries. The hip resurfacing surgery is to be performed on only selected patients and by expert surgeons for anexcellent result.
